The Kalaman Group was founded in 2013 by Megan Kalaman and a team of emerging art professionals with a shared commitment to the thoughtful care and stewardship of fine art. What began as a small practice supporting a handful of private collectors has evolved into a nationally recognized firm with teams across Western, Central, and Eastern Canada. Over the past 13 years, we’ve built a reputation for our depth of knowledge and specialized approach in collection management. Our expertise is shaped by years of working closely with collectors, artists, and institutions across Canada on some of the most nuanced challenges in the field of fine art stewardship.

Commitment to Rematriation/Repatriation:

Megan Kalaman

CEO & Founder

What makes a successful leader? For Megan, it is leading from the heart to inspire innovation and leadership in others. This is the foundation of The Kalaman Group. Megan has over 17 years of experience in leadership within the arts. After acquiring her BA in visual arts and art history from the University of British Columbia, she worked for three years at one of Canada’s foremost fine art galleries before pivoting into private art management, overseeing the collection of a Vancouver-based philanthropist. She then moved to Toronto, where she became a force in the Toronto art scene. She held the position of event manager at the Canadian Art Foundation between 2010 and 2012 and assisted in launching the Living Histories Project with the Art Canada Institute. In 2013, she founded Kalaman Art Collection Management, combining her love of art, entrepreneurship, and organization to provide personalized art cataloguing services to private and institutional art collectors. Today, the firm has grown to become the national corporation The Kalaman Group.

Rachael Watson

Project Director

Rachael has an eye for detail that is second to none. Since she graduated from OCAD University with a BFA in drawing and painting, with a minor in art history, she has been using her keen eye and love of the arts to make a big impact. For almost three years, she worked at the Canadian Art Foundation, quickly rising from intern to the Reel Artists Film Festival’s coordinator. Rachael began working with The Kalaman Group in 2013 when it was just beginning as Kalaman Art Collection Management. Rachael’s passion for art, along with her formidable skills in administration, collection management, and what we like to call her “eagle eye” have been instrumental in the company’s success through the years. Rachael has volunteered with cultural organizations such as MOCA, Hot Docs, and the Kiwanis Music Festival, and has sat on the committee for the Canadian Art Gala.

Liz Knox

Associate Director, Data Management

Liz is our tech, data, and spreadsheet queen. She is also a revered visual artist and professor at Emily Carr University. Liz has played a vital administrative role for numerous cultural organizations in Toronto including the Canadian Art Foundation, Vtape, and Mercer Union. She joined The Kalaman Group in 2013 when it was just beginning as Kalaman Art Collection Management. Through the years, Liz’s vast knowledge of contemporary Canadian art and her mastery of all things database has ensured that the information and products that The Kalaman Group provides to their clients are the best in our industry. Liz studied studio art at the University of Guelph and holds an MA in visual arts from Emily Carr University.

Amanda Chau

Associate Director, Projects + Research

Amanda is one of our most passionate champions of the visual arts. For over 15 years, Amanda has been working in the visual arts sector in many administrative roles. She holds a BFA in photography and printmaking, with a minor in art history, from Mount Allison University. She worked at the Art Dealers Association of Canada for two years before becoming the assistant director at one of the leading commercial art galleries in Canada. From there, she launched Walnut Contemporary, a contemporary art gallery in Toronto, where she served as artistic director until 2013. Like Rachael and Liz, Amanda joined The Kalaman Group in 2013, when it was just beginning as Kalaman Art Collection Management. Since then, she has grown into her senior role with specializations in curating, writing, and public speaking.

Em Moor

Senior Cataloguing Specialist

It is no surprise that, with an art practice that incorporates themes of collection and archiving, Em Moor is a perfect fit for our team. Based in Toronto, her passion for collecting and cataloguing is apparent in all her professional adventures: as a lens-based artist with a focus on found objects, in delving into spreadsheets or documenting art collections for the Kalaman Group, and as a freelance documentation photographer and gallery assistant. Em holds a BFA in Photography from OCAD University.

Alejandro Rizzo Nervo

Cataloguing Specialist

Alejandro began working with The Kalaman Group in 2020, instantly enriching the team with his expertise in archival processes and his passion for developing big ideas. A visual artist based in Toronto, Alejandro holds a BFA from OCAD University and a certificate in project management from George Brown College. He brings a thoughtful and creative approach to his work, particularly in supporting rematriation efforts and preserving cultural heritage.

Joe Kirby

Business Development, Fine Art Logistics

Big ideas need the right people to become reality. When The Kalaman Group identified a growing need for professional and reliable art logistics solutions in Atlantic Canada, we knew Joe was exactly who we needed to help bring this vision to life. Based in Pictou, Nova Scotia, Joe holds an Economics degree from the University of York (England). As an Operations Analyst for Convelio UK, he played a key role in helping the then-emerging company grow into one of the most recognized names in art logistics across the UK. When he’s not strategizing or analyzing data to ensure safe and efficient movement of artwork, you’ll likely find Joe feeding the deer at Caribou Harbour, Nova Scotia.

Brea McAllister

Preparator

Brea joined The Kalaman Group team in 2020 with an extensive roster in art preparation. She completed the Walter Phillips Gallery Preparatorial Practicum at the Banff Centre for the Arts and has worked as the studio assistant to artists Jordan Bennett and Amy Malbeuf. She holds a BFA in sculpture from NSCAD University.

Sofia Stalner

Appraiser

Sofia Stalner is The Kalaman Group’s primary contact for all things appraisals. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from the University of Westminster (London, UK) and a M.A. in Art History (Critical Curatorial Studies) from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Her credentials also include the completion of the International Society of Appraisers’ Core Course in Appraisal Methodology. We are proud to add that her appraisals are prepared in accordance with appraisal standards stipulated by the International Society of Appraisers, and her appraisal reports written in accordance with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice.

Delaney Ryan

Documenter

Delaney Ryan is a cultural worker, writer and artist living in Halifax. In 2023, she joined The Kalaman Group’s east coast team as a documenter for several major collections in Nova Scotia. She holds a BFA from Concordia University (2019) and received an MA in Art History from Queen’s University (2021). Delaney has previously worked for the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, and is a regular writer and art critic for Billie Magazine.

Sungpil Yoon

Documenter

Sungpil has been working with The Kalaman Group on the West Coast dream team since 2023. In his own art practice, Sungpil is interested in making photographic documentation through still and moving images pertaining to analog, film and other gradual processes. He completed his BA in Art History at UBC.

Malik Dieleman

Documenter and Photo Editor

Malik is a Toronto-based photographer and multidisciplinary artist. He graduated with distinction from OCAD University in 2020 with a BFA in photography. Along with being a freelance photographer and videographer, he holds several other positions in marketing, social media, and content creation. Malik lends his camera proficiency to his role as one of The Kalaman Group’s artwork documenters.

Natasha Verbeke

Documenter

Natasha is a visual artist who joined The Kalaman Group in 2022 as one of our rock star art documenters. She holds a BFA from NSCAD University, and is currently working towards her MFA at the University of Guelph. When she isn’t photographing an extensive art collection with the team, you can find her in her painting studio.
